Director JOHN SINGLETON passed away yesterday, when his family pulled him off life support. He’d suffered a massive stroke two weeks ago, and was reportedly in a coma. John was 51. His death HAS been confirmed . . . but up until now, there have been conflicting reports on the severity of his condition from various family members, who apparently are feuding behind the scenes.
He was most famous for “Boyz N the Hood”, which starred Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, and Morris Chestnut.
That 1991 classic was Singleton’s directorial debut and it earned him the first Oscar nomination for an African American director. He was nominated for both directing AND writing the screenplay. He also directed “Poetic Justice”, “Higher Learning”, “Rosewood”, “Baby Boy”, “2 Fast 2 Furious”, and the 2000 Samuel L. Jackson version of “Shaft”.
